Enneagram Type 6 - The Loyal Sceptic

Enneagram Sixes value security and belonging, as this style stems from the motivational need to be safe and prepared. Therefore, loyalty and trust are important to Sixes, who strive to be responsible and prepared at all times. They can be courageous and connected to a sense of inner knowing. They may also worry excessively, and may be perceived as anxious, distrustful or sceptical.

Something to think about for the 6 :

"The world is a threatening and unsafe place. Be prepared. Be loyal. People can count on me. Be careful who you trust. I must not be afraid, but I must not let my guard down. I must protect myself, but I must be loyal."

Enneagram characteristics type 6

In a few words :

  • Dedication: Sixes are committed to what they value, expressing duty and care in the service of people, responsibilities and causes.
  • Courage: Sixes often courageously take a stand on behalf of the common good, despite concerns and risks.
  • Preparedness: Alert and aware of risks, the Six are attentive to what is happening in their world and act to minimise risks and threats.
  • Reliability: Once the Six make a decision or commitment, they stick to it. They also respect rules and authority, as long as they feel they can trust the source or intention.
  • Team spirit: Sixes value cooperation and collaboration in groups and thrive in a healthy team environment.
  • Typical Action Patterns: The centre of the intellect in the Enneagram (the head). The Enneatype Six focuses on the moment ahead and the main accompanying feeling is anxiety, which in their case, is seen as that constant need to be safe, (or fear of not being prepared enough for the worst).

Blind spots :

  1. Sixes constantly focus on things that can go wrong, so their timid and cautious approach can be perceived by others as stubbornness, pessimism and negative behaviour - the glass half empty.
  2. Sixes tend to worry a lot about what might happen and their ability to cope, which can make them appear insecure. Others may then doubt the Six's ability to take care of things.
  3. Projection is a central problem for Sixes. Projecting their fears onto the people around them can be a way of avoiding taking responsibility for their own emotions, concerns and worries. They wonder whether people can be trusted.
