Enneagram Type 5 - The Quiet Specialist

Enneagram 5s have a motivational need to know and understand. 5s like to make sense of the world around them and therefore objectivity and knowledge are important to them. 5s seek independence, value privacy and tend to conserve their resources to ensure future independence. They offer the gift of non-attachment to themselves and the world. They can be seen as stingy, intellectually arrogant and disconnected from their hearts, as they withdraw into their minds to avoid being swallowed up or invaded.

Something to think about for the 5 :

"The world is intrusive; I have to protect my resources and my energy so that I can think. I have to be self-sufficient and not too dependent on others. I need to understand and make sense of my world. I don't need much but I need my space."

Enneagram characteristics type 5

In a few words :

  • Insightful: The 5 offer objective, thorough and perceptive observations of situations and information. They are able to handle complex problems and data.
  • Curious: Their intellectual interests and ideals allow Cincs to explore and gain expertise in a variety of fields, subjects and theories.
  • Unsentimental: Cinque people approach life in an unsentimental way and can put their emotions aside when necessary.
  • Self-sufficient: Independent Fives protect their autonomy and privacy. They prefer to ask little of others and are able to minimise their own needs.
  • Inventive: The Five's unconventional ideas and in-depth knowledge enable them to be inventive, visionary and pioneering.
  • Typical Action Patterns: The centre of the intellect in the Enneagram (the head). The Enneatype Cinque focuses on the future moment and the main feeling that accompanies this is anxiety, which in their case, is seen as that permanent need to be the expert in knowledge (or fear of disappearing without knowledge).

Blind spots :

  1. For a Five, the ability to detach from feelings and practice objective thinking can come at the expense of interpersonal warmth. Even when Fives feel warmth, it may not be obvious to others.
  2. In trying to explain information and share expertise, Fives can come across as condescending or haughty. This can silence people and prevent them from understanding and paying attention to what the Five is trying to say.
  3. Cinques are fiercely protective of their time and resources, essentially hoarding them. This may seem like prudence to the Five, but can be seen as greed by others.
