Enneagram Type 9 - The Adaptive Peacemaker

Enneagram Nine people are motivated by a need to settle down and be in harmony with the world and, as a result, it is important for them to be accommodating and accepting. They seek a peaceful existence and value stability, preferring to avoid conflict. Nines are seen as self-aware and dynamic. They offer the gift of right and lasting action to themselves and the world around them. They can also be perceived as procrastinators, stubborn and giving up.

A thought for the 9:

"I'm fine as long as the people around me are fine too. The world would be a better place if people could treat each other with respect. I have to keep the peace; I have to be tolerant and accepting; can't everyone just get along?"

Enneagram characteristics type 9

In a few words:

Agreeable: Nines are easy to get along with. Others see them as open, receptive and peaceful.
Understanding : The enneatype Nine is able to listen to differences and understand multiple perspectives, with a great talent for synthesis and finding common ground through differences.
Patience: Nines do things calmly and sustainably, trusting in the natural rhythm of projects and processes. They like routines to feel stable.
Support: Others feel accepted, heard and understood in the presence of Neufs. They accept people for who they are and see their full potential.
Authentic: What you see is what you get with a 9: no pretence. Spontaneity.
Typical Action Patterns: Centre of action in the enneagram (the body). Enneatypes Nine focus on the present moment and the main accompanying feeling is anger, which in their case, is seen as indolence / action without thought (or "vulcanised" anger: swallowing tensions and exploding after a while).

Blind spots :

  • Nines avoid being controlled by others in a counter-intuitive way, by being passive, non-assertive and impassive: Passive Resistance. This indirect behavioural pattern can have an impact on their communication and relationships.
  • Nines want to avoid controversy. While they don't like people pushing them to do something, they also find it hard to say no to people. While Nines will go out of their way to please others and minimise their own needs, thereby exposing themselves to neglect, Nines don't like to be ignored.
  • By being diplomatic and flexible, Nines may not make their true needs, desires and feelings known to those around them. The Nine may feel that they are making it very clear, but because of their approach, others may miss what they really want and need.

FAQ

What is the best Enneagram type?

There is no "best" Enneagram type. Each type has its own strengths and weaknesses, and all types can thrive and succeed in life. The Enneagram is a tool for understanding personality and behaviour, not for judging or classifying people. It promotes personal growth and interpersonal relationships.

How do I find my Enneagram profile?

To find your Enneagram profile, you can start by reading descriptions of the nine types and identifying with the type that seems to best match your personality. The most reliable method is to take an online Enneagram test to determine your main type. To obtain a reliable result, we recommend that you complete the test sincerely and spontaneously. A discussion with an Enneagram professional will help you to better understand your profile and identify areas for improvement.

How do we interpret the Enneagram?

The Enneagram is a complex system that provides a better understanding of personality, motivations and behaviours. To interpret it, it is important to understand the nine personality types, the subtypes and the wings. An Enneagram expert can help you better understand the results of a test and coach you in defining and implementing a path for improvement.

Who created the Enneagram?

The exact origin of the Enneagram is not completely certain, but it is often attributed to Sufi mystical teachings and various ancient spiritual traditions. The Personality Enneagram, as it is known today, was developed by psychologists and researchers such as Oscar Ichazo and Claudio Naranjo in the 1950s and 1960s.
